Sieyuan supplied a complete 420 kV and 252 kV GIS package for the main substation of a high-purity silicon plant in Oman's Sohar Free Zone.
420 kV GIS Solution Powering Oman's High Purity Silicon Industry

To support a large-scale high-purity silicon production plant in Oman's Sohar Free Zone, Sieyuan delivered a complete 420 kV and 252 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) solution for the plant's main substation. Located in a demanding coastal industrial environment, the project required equipment capable of ensuring reliable operation under high temperatures, coastal conditions and strict safety requirements. The solution was designed to meet the requirements of Oman's grid operator OETC, local DGSM standards and international project expectations, providing a reliable power supply foundation for continuous industrial production.
Project Overview
Project Background
The Sohar Free Zone hosts one of Oman's major industrial clusters, where reliable electricity supply is critical for energy-intensive manufacturing. The polysilicon production facility operates in a challenging environment defined by high temperatures, coastal exposure, and stringent operational requirements. The main substation therefore required high-voltage equipment with strong environmental adaptability, long-term reliability, and seamless integration with the local grid. Sieyuan provided a complete GIS package and coordinated engineering, manufacturing, testing, and commissioning to support successful project delivery.
Key Challenges
Meeting demanding grid and local requirements — The project required compliance with OETC grid specifications, IEC 62271 standards, and Oman DGSM requirements, while meeting strict expectations for safety, reliability, and environmental performance.
Reliable operation in harsh coastal environments — Located near the Persian Gulf, the substation is exposed to high temperatures, humidity, salt-laden air, and demanding industrial conditions, requiring equipment with excellent durability and long-term reliability.
Ensuring uninterrupted power for continuous manufacturing — Polysilicon production depends on a stable, continuous power supply, so the substation required highly reliable equipment with high availability and dependable long-term performance.
Sieyuan Solution
Tailored GIS for local grid requirements — Sieyuan delivered a customized 420 kV and 252 kV GIS solution designed to meet OETC, DGSM, and IEC requirements while ensuring seamless integration with Oman's transmission network.
Engineered for harsh coastal conditions — The GIS incorporates enhanced anti-corrosion protection and environmental design measures for reliable operation under high temperatures and salt-laden coastal conditions.
Comprehensive quality assurance — Rigorous design verification, manufacturing quality control, and factory acceptance testing (FAT) ensured consistent product quality and reliable field performance.
Efficient project delivery — Sieyuan coordinated engineering, manufacturing, logistics, and commissioning to support efficient execution and successful grid energization.
Technical Highlights
High interrupting capability — Designed to OETC requirements, the GIS provides 63 kA short-circuit breaking capability at 420 kV and 50 kA at 252 kV, ensuring reliable performance across Oman's transmission network.
Corrosion-resistant design — Enhanced anti-corrosion protection supports long-term operation in high-temperature, high-humidity, and salt-laden coastal environments.
High insulation reliability — Advanced sealing technology helps maintain long-term insulation integrity while supporting safe and reliable operation.
Intelligent condition monitoring — Integrated monitoring continuously reports equipment status, enabling predictive maintenance and improving asset availability.
Proven project delivery — The complete GIS system passed factory acceptance testing (FAT), site commissioning, and grid energization in accordance with OETC, DGSM, and project requirements.
