Project Overview

Sieyuan supplied customized 300 kV outdoor AC disconnectors and supporting structures for the 275 kV switchyard of the Wambo Wind Farm in Australia.

300 kV three-column horizontal rotating disconnectors with grey insulators in a wind farm switchyard

Project Background

The Wambo Wind Farm Project of Insulect Energy required outdoor high-voltage disconnectors and supporting structures for its 275 kV switchyard. The customer specified requirements for electrical performance, long-term outdoor operation, reliable interlocking, corrosion protection, and installation adaptability. The project also required insulators in a specified grey color to match the appearance of the electrical facilities.

Key Challenges

  • Electrical performance: Meeting specified requirements for operating frequency, insulation coordination, and current-carrying capability.

  • Outdoor durability: Maintaining conductivity, heat dissipation, and corrosion resistance while addressing contact reliability during long-term outdoor operation.

  • Operational safety: Providing overload and short-circuit protection and enforcing mechanical and electrical interlocking between the disconnector and earthing switch.

  • Installation adaptability: Providing corrosion-resistant structures, sealed bearing housings, adjustable insulator mounting, and supporting structures tailored to site foundations.

Sieyuan Solution

  • Customized disconnector platform

Sieyuan adopted the proven three-column horizontal rotating GW7B platform, with electrical configurations tailored to project-specific requirements.

  • Optimized current-carrying components

The main conducting arms and stationary contact seats use high-strength anodized aluminum alloy profiles. Stainless-steel finger springs with insulation pads address corrosion and unintended current paths. Copper-graphite silver-plated contacts help reduce contact resistance, while arcing contacts protect the main contacts during switching operations.

  • Operating mechanism and interlocking

A customized motor-operated mechanism uses thermal-magnetic relays to provide dual protection against overload and short circuit. Adjustable auxiliary switches and electromagnetic locks enforce mechanical and electrical interlocking between the disconnector and earthing switch. Local open/close indicator lights and an insulated manual operating handle support on-site operation.

  • Corrosion protection and installation

The base frame features an integrated welded structure with overall hot-dip galvanizing. Fully sealed bearing housings eliminate the need for lubrication maintenance. Adjustable insulator mounting height and dual-earthing operation address installation requirements, while supporting structures were customized to suit site foundation conditions.

  • Appearance customization

The insulators were customized in the specified grey color to meet the project's appearance requirements.

Technical Highlights

  • Project-specific electrical and structural adaptation

The 300 kV disconnectors combine the GW7B-based design with customized electrical configurations and supporting structures for the project's switchyard, addressing project-specific electrical and installation requirements.

  • Integrated protection and operational safety

Thermal-magnetic relay protection, forced mechanical and electrical interlocking, and local operating indicators integrate protection and operational safety features into the disconnector operating system.

  • Outdoor durability and installation flexibility

Hot-dip-galvanized supporting structures, sealed bearing housings, corrosion-conscious contact design, adjustable insulator mounting, and customized supporting structures address the project's outdoor exposure and installation requirements.
