Sieyuan supplied 220 kV AIS circuit breakers and disconnectors engineered for −45 °C operation and 20 mm ice accretion at the Shokparskaya wind farm in Kazakhstan.
Sieyuan Electric 220 kV AIS Circuit Breaker and Disconnector Solution for a Wind Farm in Kazakhstan

For the Shokparskaya 100 MW Wind Farm 220 kV AIS Project in Kazakhstan, Sieyuan Electric developed a customized solution for extreme cold and heavy icing conditions. The solution incorporates reinforced insulation components, enhanced external insulation, and a low-temperature operating mechanism to maintain reliable equipment performance. The complete solution passed environmental testing at -50°C, providing additional performance margin beyond the -45°C operating requirement. The solution also addressed and verified all 15 customer technical requirements, supporting reliable grid connection for the wind farm.
Project Overview
Project Background
The Shokparskaya Wind Power Station is a 100 MW wind farm in Kazakhstan, featuring a 220 kV step-up substation and AIS switchyard for collecting, stepping up and exporting wind power to the grid.Located in a cold steppe region of Central Asia, the project requires reliable 220 kV AIS equipment operation at temperatures as low as -45°C and under maximum ice accretion of 20 mm.
Key Challenges
- Extreme cold affecting equipment performance — Temperatures down to -45°C could cause brittleness and sluggish operation of insulation supports, operating rods and secondary components.
- Heavy icing and meltwater refreezing — Ice accretion of up to 20 mm could cause ice buildup on control cabinet roofs, while poor drainage could allow meltwater to accumulate and refreeze.
- External insulation under combined pollution and icing — The combined effects of pollution and icing increased the risk of external insulation flashover, requiring a higher specific creepage distance.
- Reliable disconnector operation at low temperatures — Disconnectors needed to maintain smooth operation and stable opening-closing times under extreme cold and icing conditions.
- Multiple customized technical requirements — The customer specified 15 key technical requirements covering equipment structure, materials, insulation, secondary systems and accessories.
Sieyuan Solution
- Structural and material reinforcement for extreme conditions — The control cabinet roof was redesigned with a steep slope and drainage holes to facilitate meltwater discharge and prevent refreezing. Low-temperature-resistant epoxy glass-fiber components were adopted for insulation supports, partitions and operating rods, increasing mechanical strength by approximately 40%.
- Enhanced external insulation for harsh conditions — The bushing specific creepage distance was increased from 25 mm/kV to 31 mm/kV for Class IV pollution conditions, with optimized shed geometry to improve flashover performance.
- Low-temperature operating mechanism for reliable switching — Low-temperature grease was applied to the operating mechanism. Opening-closing time remained within 10 s, with no sticking or sluggish operation observed at -45°C and under 20 mm ice accretion. Timing deviation was limited to ±1 s.
- Requirement-based customization and verification — All 15 customer technical requirements were addressed, implemented and verified, covering the equipment structure, insulation, materials, secondary systems and accessories.
Technical Highlights
- -50°C environmental testing — The complete solution passed environmental testing at -50°C, exceeding the -45°C operating requirement.
- Approximately 40% higher mechanical strength — Reinforced insulation components achieved an approximately 40% increase in mechanical strength and passed specialized bending, torsion and impact tests.
- 31 mm/kV specific creepage distance — The enhanced external insulation design meets Class IV pollution requirements and provides greater margin under combined pollution and icing conditions.
- Stable disconnector operation within 10 s — Opening-closing time remained within 10 s, with timing deviation limited to ±1 s under the specified conditions.
- 15 technical requirements verified — All customer requirements were implemented and verified, demonstrating the solution's suitability for extreme-climate renewable energy projects in Central Asia.
