Sieyuan Grid-Forming Energy Storage System Unlocks the 'Grid Revival Technique' of the High Penetration Renewables Girds

On April 2nd, Sieyuan successfully completed the world’s first string architecture and all-in-one battery energy storage system(BESS) black start and islanding power supply in Mongolia 110kV substations.
When the entire 15km region 110kV PV+BESS substations and power grid fell into a deep ‘coma’, the state-of-the-art BESS ‘Grid AED’ revitalized the power system within 1 minute with 192 string-type power conversion systems(PCS) and a total capacity of 80MWh.
The ‘black start’ technology, honored as the ‘Grid AED’ , refers to the capability to independently and rapidly restore power supply without relying on external power system in case of power grid outage or blackout. The successful implementation of the 110kV black start signifies that Sieyuan's grid-forming energy storage system now possesses the ability to provide emergency power support for large-scale power grids , offering a ‘life-restarting’ safeguard for the power system. During the project test, Sieyuan's grid-forming energy storage system ‘completed the system-level black start in a flash’ within 1 minute with reliable voltage and frequency control, resurrecting a substation 15 kilometers away through a 110kV overhead line, and providing continuous and stable power supply to urban loads for several hours until the power grid was restored. During this period, the energy storage system worked in tandem with the photovoltaic system to construct a wide-area microgrid with photovoltaic-storage off-grid capabilities, achieving long-term autonomous and stable operation.
Mongolia is renowned for its abundant wind and solar energy resources, but the stability issues associated with these renewable energies have always been a major challenge for the local power grid. Choosing to debut in such a harsh environment in Mongolia not only verified the reliability of Sieyuan's technology, providing key technical support for the large-scale integration of renewable energy, but also demonstrated the firm determination and hard power of Chinese enterprises in serving the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, winning high recognition and praise from relevant officials of the Mongolian power grid company.
