Project Background -
Located in Saudi Arabian NEOM development zone, this large-scale integrated photovoltaic and wind power plant is a core flagship project of the KSA vision 2030 strategy. The massive integration of intermittent solar and wind generation introduces complex grid volatility issues, placing extremely high demands on dynamic reactive power regulation, grid voltage stability, and the environmental adaptability.
Key Challenges -
The project faces rigorous challenges from harsh desert climatic conditions to sophisticated grid operational requirements. In terms of the operating environment, the site suffers from extreme ambient temperatures, persistent sandstorms and dust accumulation, and long-term harsh desert erosion, which pose severe threats to equipment durability, operational stability and service lifecycle. In terms of grid operation, the inherent intermittency and fluctuation of large-scale photovoltaic and wind power output lead to frequent voltage swings and unstable grid dynamics. In particular, Saudi Arabia’s grid imposes extremely stringent Low Voltage Ride Through (LVRT) and High Voltage Ride Through (HVRT) technical criteria, requiring power equipment to maintain stable grid-connected operation and provide dynamic reactive power support during sudden grid voltage dips and surges, without off-grid tripping. Overall, the project demands high-precision, fast-response reactive power compensation equipment with outstanding grid fault ride-through capability, excellent environmental adaptability, reliable communication transmission, standardized safety protection and strong parallel operation performance to guarantee stable grid-connected operation of the entire new energy station.

To tackle the extreme environmental conditions and complex grid regulation demands, Sieyuan Electric provides a tailored high-performance STATCOM dynamic reactive power compensation solution for the NEOM project. The project deploys totally 30 sets of 35Mvar outdoor STATCOM devices, delivering a total capacity of as much as 1.05 GVAr. The system achieves millisecond-level dynamic response, enabling real-time reactive power injection and absorption to stabilize grid system voltage, accelerating voltage recovery during grid contingencies. It can continuously maintain grid-connected operation and generate dynamic reactive power support during grid contingencies. The powerful grid adaptability greatly improve the grid-friendly performance of large-scale renewable energy stations.
Extreme Environmental Adaptability: Meet the rigorous requirements under extreme high-temperature and desert environmental conditions. Multi-units Parallel Operation: Special design enables stable parallel operation of up to 18 units across 3 substations, featuring excellent synchronization performance and scalability for large-scale new energy power clusters.
Multi-dimensional Safety Design: Equipped with mechanical interlocking structure and capacitors discharging delay function, it effectively prevents accidental electric shock and residual voltage discharging risks, ensuring a safer operation during equipment inspection and maintenance.
Redundant Communication Design: The system realizes dual-loop redundancy for communication ports, eliminating single-point communication failures and improving the reliability of the overall data transmission system.
Localized Fire Protection System: Fully compliant with Saudi Arabian local fire safety standards, the customized fire protection solution is fully matched with the customer’s central fire control host.
